Who are Master Gardeners?

Lubbock Master Gardeners are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers and gardens. They are enthusiastic, willing to learn, willing to teach, and interested in helping others. Master Gardeners are able to communicate with diverse groups of people.

What really sets Master Gardeners apart from other home gardeners is their special training in horticulture. In exchange for their training, persons who become Master Gardeners contribute time as volunteers, working through their cooperative extension office to provide horticultural-related information to their communities.

Meetings are held the first Tuesday each month (except December) from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the Westminster Presbyterian Church at 33rd and Hartford.

Lubbock County Master Gardeners was organized in 1992. The organization is a member of the Texas State Master Gardeners Association and the Lubbock Council of Garden Clubs.

Lubbock Master Gardeners on the Radio

Every Friday at 12:30 p.m., tune into Fox Talk radio (950 AM or 100.7 FM). Master Gardeners have a regular segment on "Ag Talk with Eddie Griffis." Each week, a different Master Gardener will give timely information about what is going on in Lubbock gardens and will answer questions on the telephone. The program is simulcast on DJTVD2 (Suddenlink Cable Channel 9).

Becoming a Master Gardener

The Master Gardener course is offered once a year beginning in mid January. Classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday at the Extension Office. These are taught by a variety of individuals who have expertise in specialized areas. An application must be submitted and evaluated before you can be accepted into the Master Gardener program. In addition, there is a fee of $160 to cover the cost of course materials and a background check (since you may be working with children). Master Gardener interns are issued a comprehensive three-ring binder filled with material that will be used in the course.

There will be no Master Gardener training courses in 2012. We will have a training course in January 2013.

For initial certification Master Gardeners must complete 50 volunteer hours within one year of the coursework.

Maintaining Certification

To maintain certification, Master Gardeners must complete 12 hours of volunteer or teaching hours and 6 continuing education hours every year.
